Go on a Sunrise Hike

Half Day Free Park / Trail TeensAdults Mild Day

Set the alarm absurdly early, hit a trail before the world wakes up, and watch the sky turn orange from somewhere beautiful.

A sunrise hike is one of those activities that sounds terrible when the alarm goes off but becomes a core memory by the time you reach the viewpoint. The quiet, the colors, the accomplishment — worth every lost minute of sleep.

What You Need

  • Alarm clock (set it and don't snooze)
  • Trail-appropriate shoes
  • Water bottle (at least 16 oz)
  • Light layers
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Snacks or thermos of coffee
  • Phone/camera
  • Trail map or downloaded offline map

How To Do It

  1. Pick your trail the night before — choose one you know or well-marked
  2. Calculate start time — sunrise minus hike time minus drive time equals alarm time
  3. Prep the night before — lay out clothes, pack bag, fill water
  4. Drive in the dark — bring coffee, play upbeat music
  5. Hike up — start with headlamp, stay on marked paths
  6. Find your spot — arrive 10-15 minutes early, sit down, be quiet, watch the magic

Pro Tips

Best time: Any clear morning. Best colors come with a few clouds to catch the light.

Seasonal tip: Early summer sunrises are EARLY (5:30-6:00 AM). By August you get a more reasonable 6:15-6:45.

Good to know: Check if the trail or park requires permits or has specific gate opening hours.

Safety Note: Tell someone where you're going. Stay on marked trails. Bring a charged phone. Watch for roots and rocks. Bring more water than you think.

Variations by Age

Try a sunrise from the backyard instead — blankets, hot cocoa, much easier.

Friend challenge — who can wake up earliest? Reward with diner breakfast after.

Go solo for meditation, or make it a date with a picnic breakfast at the summit.

Choose a paved or flat trail. Drive to a scenic overlook instead. Bring a camp chair.

Accessibility

Low-mobility: Many overlooks are car-accessible. Search for accessible scenic viewpoints. Vision-friendly: Pair with a sighted companion, focus on warmth and sounds. Stroller-friendly: Paved greenway trails, check elevation.
