Catch Fireflies in a Jar

1 hour Free Backyard KidsFamilies Mild Day

Grab a mason jar, head outside at dusk, and chase the blinking lights. A summer evening tradition as old as time.

Few things say "summer" like watching fireflies blink across a dark yard. Catching them is gentle fun that connects you to nature and slows everything down for a moment.

What You Need

  • Mason jar or clear container with lid
  • Something to poke air holes in the lid
  • Damp paper towel for the jar
  • A grass blade or small leaf
  • Flashlight for walking (not for spotting fireflies)

How To Do It

  1. Prep your jar — poke air holes in the lid, add a damp paper towel and grass blade
  2. Go out at dusk — fireflies appear 20-40 minutes after sunset
  3. Watch first — spend a few minutes observing the light show
  4. Catch gently — cup your hands around a firefly and transfer to jar
  5. Enjoy the glow — observe them up close
  6. Release before bed — let them all go, this is the most important step!

Pro Tips

Best time: 20-40 minutes after sunset, typically 8:30-10:00 PM. Late June through July is peak season.

Seasonal tip: Warm, humid evenings with no wind produce the most fireflies. Check after a rainy day.

Good to know: Some areas have declining firefly populations. Always release them. Avoid lawn pesticides.

Safety Note: Watch where you step in the dark. Bring a flashlight for walking but turn it off in the catching zone. Bug spray is fine to wear but don't spray near the jar.

Variations by Age

Make it a counting game. Let toddlers hold the jar while older kids catch. Bring glow sticks as backup fun.

Photography challenge — capture firefly trails with long-exposure phone camera.

Bring a blanket and wine. Just watch — no catching needed. It's meditation with a light show.

Set up a comfortable chair in the yard. No need to chase — fireflies come to you in a dark, still yard.

Accessibility

Low-mobility: Position a chair in a good viewing spot. Vision-friendly: Firefly lights are bright and easy to spot. Stroller-friendly: Works from a paved backyard.
